How do you create a gift or décor item that has universal appeal, and sells in massive numbers across the country? As you might imagine, the origin of creativity begins at an early age. Here at Millwork Engineering Inc. DBA: The Craft Room and Freeform Designs, most of our people have grown up on family farms and in family businesses.

If something was broken in our household or property our parents would fix it using skills handed down to them by their parents. If the carved wooden arm of an antique chair is broken, our fathers would carve a new one and teach us children all the while. If a metal arm on the family tractor was rusted and broken, our parents didn’t run to the hardware store if it could be avoided. We filed, welded, and forged metal parts such as we could. Soon children acquire skills of their parents, meager at first but which grow over a lifetime of experiences. Our parents passed down a knowledge of the marketplace and taught us that if you produce something of value either intrinsic or artistic others may want your creations to use as gifts, décor, or everyday use.

And so it is at Freeform Designs and the Craft Room, starting in the late 1970’s the founders drew upon skills gained from their upbringing to start creating wooden items: shelves, benches, small tables, chess boards and picture frames. To begin with, these items were made as gifts for family and friends. Soon neighbors and acquaintances were requesting our items. When demand grew even larger the family garage wasn’t large enough to produce the items that people wanted, we had to find a separate larger workshop. As demand grew even further we had to start hiring employees, and business grew month to month year to year. Around 1990 two items we created sold in such numbers that new equipment and facilities were required to supply the demand. Both these items were plaques designed for your porch or door. The resin plaques are still in demand to this very day.

In 2004 we had the idea of adding a greeting banner to the metal, barn star decor, and this new twist on an already popular theme of decorative stars became an instant success. At the same time our picture frame and framed art business continued to grow. Our business of metal and rustic stars became cost prohibitive to produce here and is now imported from our original designs. The picture frame and framed art business continues to grow, providing well needed employment here in south central Michigan. We offer beautiful framed art by popular artists as well as our  copyrighted designs on lovely magnets, fan pulls and wall hangings.Millwork Engineering, Inc. is a WBE (Women Owned Enterprise) and strives to provide the market with new and creative gifts and décor. Thanks so much for your interest in our products!
